You click buy on a 20 euro item and end up paying more at checkout. No mistake, no hidden trick, just something Vinted calls the Vinted fee, and it’s mandatory on every purchase. Here’s what it actually is, why it exists, and why the name recently changed.
What the Vinted fee actually is
Per Vinted’s terms, the Vinted fee is a mandatory platform charge you pay as a buyer whenever you place an order. It contributes to the costs of running the platform, hosting, customer support, fraud detection, and the whole system that lets you buy and sell securely.
You always see the amount upfront. On every listing, the Vinted fee is included in the price breakdown, and it’s part of the total price you see for the item or bundle. At checkout, it’s shown again separately in the order summary, so you know exactly what you’re paying for.
Why it used to have a different name
Until recently, Vinted called this the Buyer Protection fee. The name implied you were paying specifically for protection as a buyer. In the latest version of the terms, that name is gone, and Vinted now just refers to it as the Vinted fee, described more broadly as a contribution to operating the site.
Does this change your rights as a buyer? Not really. The protection you had for a damaged, incorrect, or counterfeit item is still there, it’s just now described separately under the Refund Policy instead of being tied to a fee name that explicitly promised protection. So it’s mostly a reframing, not a substantive change in what you get back when something goes wrong.
How much is it exactly
The percentage varies and is calculated per listing, you’ll always find it in the price breakdown before you pay. There’s no single fixed rate that applies identically to every item and every country.
Can you do anything about it
Not really, it’s a mandatory part of every transaction on the platform, same as shipping. What you can do: negotiate the item price itself with the seller through an offer, that’s the only part of the total that has any flexibility. The Vinted fee itself is fixed once you check out.
The short version
The Vinted fee isn’t a hidden cost, it’s disclosed upfront and mandatory on every purchase. The name recently changed from Buyer Protection fee to Vinted fee, but your rights if something goes wrong with your order stay the same.
